ABOUT ME
I was born and raised in the Greater Toronto Area after my parents immigrated from the Caribbean in the late 70's. Currently I call Durham Region home.
Armed with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and a major in Information Technology I started my career in 2005 as a Business Systems Analyst. In this role I transformed cluttered business requirements into streamlined processes using technology and automation.
When my career pivoted in 2012, I took on the Commercial Real Estate industry by using my gifts of management, organization, and process improvement. My experience in managing a diverse campus of buildings to running a province-wide planning program has sharpened my eye for finding efficiencies and opportunities where others see obstacles.
I am a mother and a wife who believes everyone can live in a space that is pleasing to the senses and reflects the heart of those who live there. Creating an environment of elegance, form and function by decluttering, categorizing and organizing is why I created Form and Function by Kira. I am excited to streamline your lifestyle and create a space customized for how you use it.
I sincerely believe form is found when space is made functional.

October was a month of celebrating milestones, enjoying live events, spending time with family, and helping clients create more functional spaces. This month, I'm taking a slightly different approach to my blog by sharing a recent client project, a practical organizing tip, and a few highlights from life outside of Form and Function by Kira.
Let's get into it!
Recently I worked with a homeowner in Pickering who wanted to get his home office organized.
His challenge wasn't a lack of space or too much stuff. He had plenty of room, adequate storage, and the containers he needed. The problem? He couldn't easily find what he needed, and he didn't have a clear system for keeping everything organized.
Documents, supplies, and everyday work items can easily end up scattered throughout a space. Before long, you're spending valuable time searching for things instead of getting work done.
For this project the goal wasn't to introduce more storage products. It was to make better use of what was already there.
My approach was to assess what he had, group similar items together, and establish a logical system that would make sense to him long after I left.
We made better use of his existing storage and introduced labels to make items easier to identify and return to their designated homes.
Labels are a simple but effective organizing tool. They remove the guesswork, make things easier to locate, and provide a visual reminder of where everything belongs.
Another important step in my process is walking the client through the finished space. I explain how everything has been organized, where items are stored, and how to maintain the new systems.
I want my clients to feel comfortable using their newly organized spaces, not dependent on me to remember where everything goes.
After all, the goal isn't simply to leave a room looking organized. It's to create a space that continues to function well in everyday life.
My takeaway: You don't always need more storage to get organized. Sometimes, you need a better system for using what you already have.
If your home office feels disorganized consider whether you really need more space, or simply need to establish clear homes for your belongings. The solution might be simpler than you think.

Let's talk about something many of us struggle with: paperwork. A relic from the past that just won't go away.
Whether it's tax documents, receipts, insurance information, or household records, paper has a way of accumulating. The key is choosing the right storage solution for the job.
This month I'm focusing on hanging file folders and accordion-style file organizers.
Accordion folders are particularly useful when you need to collect documents for a specific purpose or period of time.
For example, if you gather your tax documents throughout the year, an accordion folder can keep everything in one convenient place until tax season.
You can dedicate sections to different categories, such as employment income, charitable donations, and other tax-related paperwork. When it's time to prepare your return, everything is ready to go.
Hanging file folders can also work well for documents you need to access regularly.
The key is to give your paperwork a clear purpose and a designated home rather than allowing it to pile up on your desk or kitchen counter.
If you're keeping documents for several years a filing cabinet with hanging folders may be a better option.
You can label folders by category or year making it easier to retrieve specific documents when needed. For example, if you need to retain legal records for several years, a clearly labelled filing system helps keep those records together and accessible.
Remember that document-retention requirements vary depending on the type of record and your circumstances. Confirm how long you need to keep each category of paperwork before deciding what to discard.
Before purchasing another organizing product, ask yourself two questions:
How long do I need to keep these documents?
How frequently will I need to access documents?
Your answers will help you determine whether a portable accordion folder, hanging file folders, or a filing cabinet is the right fit.
Remember, an organizing product is only as useful as the system behind it. The goal is to make your documents easy to locate, simple to maintain, and accessible when you need them.

October was a full month, with a little bit of everything. Here's a look at what kept me busy outside of my organizing projects.
October marked our 20th wedding anniversary!
We didn't plan anything particularly elaborate this year but we celebrated with dinner at Sugarcane Restaurant. Twenty years is a milestone worth acknowledging, and it was nice to take some time out to celebrate together.
Sometimes the simplest celebrations are just as meaningful as the big ones.
My mother, a group of her friends, and I went to see Hell's Kitchen, the musical featuring the music of Alicia Keys.
The production has received praise for its powerful vocals, energetic choreography, and use of Keys' music, although some reviews have been less enthusiastic about the storytelling.
My own verdict? I'd give it a 6 out of 10.
I enjoyed aspects of the production, and I wouldn't discourage anyone from seeing it. However, I don't think it's one I'd recommend to see.
Still, that's the beauty of live theatre. What resonates with one person might not have quite the same impact on someone else!
The Saturday after our anniversary, I took my husband to hear Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.
I've purchased season tickets for this year's performances, and this was my first concert of the season. I bought two tickets for each performance and I'm looking forward to bringing different family members and friends along to the ten throughout the year.
I'm excited to make more room for live experiences and see which performances stand out over the coming months.
Thanksgiving was another opportunity to gather with family and enjoy a lovely dinner together.
Another weekend we drove to Port Hope with our teenage son, who's learning to drive. We wanted somewhere scenic with quieter roads where he could practice without the pressure of busy city traffic.
It was a nice way to combine family time with something practical. As parents we're always looking for opportunities to help our children develop new skills and become more independent.
Unfortunately, not every part of October was positive.
On the Friday before the Thanksgiving long weekend, my son was stopped at a red light on his bicycle when an adult cyclist passed him, knocked him off his bike, and ran over his forearm with the rear wheel.
What made the incident particularly upsetting was that the individual didn't stop to check whether my son was okay.
My priority was getting him medical attention. After exploring our options, we obtained X-rays, and thankfully, nothing was broken. The injury appeared to involve soft tissue, which was a relief.
Even so it was a frightening experience and a disappointing reminder of the importance of looking out for one another.
Accidents can happen, but stopping to check on someone you've knocked down is simply the right thing to do. I'm grateful the outcome wasn't worse, and we're focusing on his recovery.

November is a great time to tackle those organizing projects you've been putting off, especially in outdoor spaces.
The weather is often still relatively mild, making it more comfortable to organize a garage or shed before winter arrives. Whether your garage needs a better storage system, your shed has become a catch-all, or your home office needs a reset, a well-organized space can make everyday life easier.
With the holiday season approaching, now is also a good time to get ahead of the clutter before December gets busy.
I currently have four project openings available for November.
If you've been thinking about organizing your home, let's take that first step together.
